Background:Baclofen and gabapentin have been reported to be efficacious in treating patients with chronic pain and other conditions associated with nerve damage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of baclofen in reducing nerve inflammation and pain after a single dose of baclofen in patients with chronic spinal pain.
Methods:A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of baclofen in reducing the pain intensity after single-dose administration. Twenty-five patients with chronic spinal pain (i.e., 10 with spinal cord injury) received baclofen 10 mg and/or 10 mg in addition to the standard dosing regimen. Patients were evaluated during the first and second weeks of the treatment and at the end of the follow-up. The study was performed by an independent pharmacy.
Results:Among the 35 patients, 15 (70.6%) experienced pain. The median pain intensity at baseline and end of the treatment was 13.5 mm (range, 8-16 mm) and 13.5 mm (8-16 mm), respectively. There were no significant differences in the number of adverse events. A significant reduction in the pain score was seen in 12 (75.8%) patients after baclofen and in 7 (36.2%) after placebo (P <.05). Baclofen significantly decreased the pain score (P <.05). The number of adverse events was low.
Conclusions:The findings of this study suggest that baclofen can reduce pain intensity in patients with spinal cord injury. However, the efficacy of baclofen may require a dose adjustment of patients on this drug.
